Something interesting I learned while travelling through various countries in the European Union.
Euro coins are a unique aspect of Euro currency and they have a common side known as euro side and a national side specific to each country of the Eurozone. This design was implemented to strike a balance between a unified European identity and the preservation of individual national identities.
The common side of Euro coins features a map of Europe, which includes the 12 stars of the European Union. The design was created by Belgian artist Luc Luycx.
The National side typically showcases symbols, historical figures or cultural elements that are significant to the respective country. Member countries have the freedom to design their own national sides within certain guidelines provided by the European Commission to ensure consistency and clarity.
While the designs of the National side are specific to each country the coins are issued collectively by the Eurozone Countries. This is contrast to Bank notes, where each country has its own design and is responsible for issuing its own banknotes.
Below are some examples.
